Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi, Chardonnay (2016)
Our 2016 Chardonnay opens with yellow apple, cinnamon-caramel oak, and slightly floral aromas. The apple, peach, and warm oak flavors of this clean and crisp yet silky Chardonnay pair perfectly with hearty dishes such as roast chicken with white truffle risotto and tuna noodle casserole. Best served slightly chilled. VINTAGE The 2016 vintage started and finished with ample water in the ground and in the reservoirs. An earlier-than-normal bud break with no frost events rolled into warm, sunny spring days. Summer offered classic ripening with cool night and morning temperatures and moderate days. August heated up, bringing the fruit to optimum ripeness for harvest. GROWING REGION The majority of the grapes for our Chardonnay were harvested in the Lodi American Viticultural Area (AVA) surrounding our winery. Since terroir has such a significant influence on the flavor of grapes, we selected grapes from the Central Coast AVA as well as neighboring appellations in northern San Joaquin County. These varying soils and climates gave our 2016 Chardonnay a nicely balanced, well-rounded flavor profile. WINEMAKING In order to highlight the fresh, vibrant character of our 2016 Chardonnay, the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks. We allowed a small portion of our blend to go through malolactic fermentation, adding richness and balancing the wine’s natural acidity. Oak aging on the lees for five to six months enriched the wine’s texture and complexity and added just a hint of floral.
